The Power of Paint in the Kitchen

The kitchen is typically one of the most lived-in rooms in the house. Many people enter the kitchen first thing in the morning to cook breakfast and go straight to the kitchen when they get home from work to prepare dinner. Kitchens can be a communal space for people to gather as they cross paths throughout a day or a place to eat a relaxed meal when you don’t want to set the dining room table. In smaller homes, kitchens might not be large enough for people to want to spend time in but even then, members of a household are in and out of the kitchen several times throughout any given day. Additionally, many kitchen formats are open in some way to the rest of the house and could be visible from the dining room or the living room. So, it stands to reason that an outdated kitchen could decrease your level of comfort in your home, not to mention potentially decrease the value of your home when it comes time to sell.

Of course, not everyone can afford to do a total remodel to achieve the kitchen of their dreams. However, you might not need to rip everything out and rebuild from the ground up to revitalize your space. A fresh coat of paint in the kitchen can change the whole vibe and add some new energy to your home. And if you’re on a budget, you don’t have to paint the whole kitchen either. There are several ways to spice up the kitchen without breaking the bank.

The most common place to start when painting the kitchen is the cabinets. Of course, old tattered wooden or composite cabinets can really make a kitchen seem dingier than it really is so adding a coat of paint can make all the difference. One important tip for kitchens is to try to keep things bright as it will add a more optimistic tone to your home. Pastels, yellows, and even bright whites are great kitchen colors that make the room feel lighter. And, even better, you don’t have to paint all of the cabinets, or you could choose two colors. If the wood of the cabinets is still in good shape, leaving either the lower cabinets as is and painting the upper cabinets a light color is a great way to keep things interesting. Another fun look is to paint the upper cabinets white and pick some bright color for the bottom cabinets to add a splash of color.

Another interesting look for your kitchen is to paint the ceiling. Chances are your kitchen probably doesn’t really have much in the way of blank walls for an accent color. In this circumstance, it is perfectly acceptable to turn to the ceiling as a way to add a nice pop of color in an otherwise mostly monochromatic kitchen. Here, just about anything goes, light or dark, to add your own style to the room. If your kitchen doesn’t have a lot of natural light, however, be careful about going too dark for the ceiling, as it could bring down the tone of the room a bit more than you might desire. If you live in a home that has a soffit in the kitchen, painting just the soffit is another interesting way to add color to the kitchen with just a little bit of paint.

Some other easy ideas to mix things up with your kitchen color scheme are to paint the cabinet hardware, the pantry door, or even the refrigerator (if you have an older model that you think needs a little sprucing up). The exposed cabinet look is also popular right now so you might consider removing your cabinet doors and painting the inside of your cabinets for a fresh, modern look.
