Common Exterior Paint Problems

Types of Exterior Problems

Peeling

Blistering

Blistering is often a sign of a moisture issue that arises from a construction defect.  Moisture trapped behind cedar siding can be a culprit. Alligatoring

As its name implies, this results in the paint film having the appearance of an alligator hide.  This is caused by applying a hard coating such as an enamel over a flexible surface like vinyl siding.  It is also seen when oil based coatings on exterior siding begin to break down.

Chalking

This is seen most often on aluminum siding.  If you run your palm over the surface, a layer of chalk will be left on your hand.  Heavy chalking is a sign that the coating is breaking down, and may soon fail.
