History of Richfield

Richfield, OH was named for the richness of its soil. The land that Richfield, OH currently occupies was once home to Miami, Pottawatomie, Deleware, Shawnese, Ottawa, Seneca, and Mingo Native American tribes. Eventually, the Connecticut Land Company bought out their whole reserve. Lancelot Mays founded Richfield in 1809 when he came with his family seeking an escape from civilization.

By 1811, there were enough people living in Richfield that they began to hold outdoor church services every few weeks with traveling missionaries. It is said that at times, the sermons could be heard as far as West Richfield. The Methodist Meeting House— the first church in Richfield— was built in 1822, but burned down and was rebuilt in 1856.
