The Science of Paint/Primer Combos and Why They Don't Work

When looking for paint for everyday projects it is very common to see the description “Paint and Primer in one”. This is used to describe paint companies best or premium paint. However, consumers should take note: Paint and Primer are two different products with very distinct purposes.

Paint vs Primer, What’s the Difference?

Primer is the undercoat to prepare materials before painting. It is designed to adhere to surfaces and create a layer easier for the paint to attach to. As well as providing a more uniform coating, it blocks out stains and seals out moisture. Paint provides color, sheen, scrub resistance and protection against the elements. Every paint job is different and although there are a few uses in which paint/primer combinations are appropriate, it’s rare that the combination products can get the job done correctly.

When is it okay to use mix products?

If you are repainting a surface with the same or a similar color, and it was properly prepared prior to application, it is okay to use a paint and primer mix. Nevertheless most expert painters recommend the use of them as two different products.

When is primer needed?

Primer is necessary on porous surfaces such as drywall, wood, and concrete. Without primer multiple coats would be needed, which results in the waste of time, money and energy. Primer is also needed on hard smooth surfaces such as tyle, PVC, and glass. Without applying primer the paint would not property adhere to the surface. On walls with water, smoke, or any other hard to get off stains primer is needed to properly cover the imperfections. Otherwise with paint and primer mix products the stains will eventually bleed through.
