Should I Paint That? Painting Chairs
A coat of paint to home improvement is like duct tape to.. well pretty much everything else. You can easily update and enhance the look of your home by adding a fresh coat of paint to the walls or any number of furnishings. Are chairs one of the items that can be given new life with a fresh coat of paint? Why, yes they most certainly are.
There is any number of different types of chairs you may have in your home. Kitchen and Dining Room chairs are most commonly wood, but can also be upholstered or metal. In the living room, you will most likely find upholstered chairs. There is a different process for painting chairs of different materials, so let’s explore painting the most common types of chairs.
Painting Wooden Chairs
What you will need:
PrePaint Cleaner
220 grit sandpaper
Oil Based Primer
Paint
Top Coat - Polyurethane or another sealant
Paint Sprayer (optional) paintbrushes or rollers can be used.
The Process:
Step 1: Before you begin, find an area suitable for the project, outside with good air ventilation is best. Cover the ground and surrounding areas with drop cloths or tarps.
Step 2: Prep the chairs. Remove any cushion or fabric from the chairs, if you are unable to remove it, cover with plastic. Use a PrePaint cleaner to remove all dirt, dust, grease, and grime.
Step 3: Sand the Chairs. If the chair is currently painted, sand off any loose or peeling paint. Otherwise, sand the surface lightly to help the paint adhere.
Step 4: Prime your Chairs. After sanding, apply a coat of oil-based primer to the chairs. Priming will ensure your chairs have a beautiful, clean finish. Wait for the primer to dry completely before beginning to paint.
Step 5: Paint the Chairs. A paint sprayer is a helpful tool to ensure an even coat of paint. If using a paint sprayer, just stir your paint well and add it to the reservoir of your paint sprayer. Hold the sprayer facing the furniture and slowly move back and forth slightly overlapping each paint stroke until the chair is covered completely, don't forget to turn upside down to get to the bottom. Be sure to let each coat dry before beginning the next. If you are not using a sprayer, you can paint using a brush or roller, be sure to coat the chair evenly and again wait for each coat to dry before moving on to the next.
Step 6: Seal the chair. Use polyurethane or another sealing top coat as the last coat. This final step will protect the chair from spills and general wear and tear, as well as giving them a glossy finish.
Painting Metal Chairs
What you will need:
Wire Brush
220 grit Sandpaper
Metal Primer Spray Paint
Spray Paint
Top Coat
The Process:
Step 1: Before you begin, find an area suitable for the project, outside with good air ventilation is best. Cover the ground and surrounding areas with drop cloths or tarps.
Step 2: Clean the Chairs. Use the wire brush to remove any rust spots. Using cleaner or soapy water, clean the chairs well. Let them dry before the next step
Step 3: Sand the Chairs. Sand the surface smooth for a nice finish, as well as helping the paint to adhere.
Step 4: Prime the Chairs. Use a primer to prime the surface. Be sure to use spray paint that is for metal for priming and painting. Let the primer dry for 12-24 hours before applying the next coat.
Step 5: Paint the Chairs. Apply the paint. It is important to apply this paint lightly, in multiple coats if you need to. If you apply the paint heavily, you will deal with drips and runs. Allow the chair to dry for 1-2 hours between coats. After the last coat, let it dry 24 hours.
Step 6: Apply a Top Coat.
