Should I Paint that? Interior Handrails

Handrails are a part of the house that is often overlooked, but when it is fixed up can upgrade your space. Handrails are also high traffic areas that are touched, leaned on, and maybe even a jungle gym for young kids. If you are planning on painting your handrails, check out these tips to make the process go much smoother.

1st: Clean and prep your handrail to make sure that all debris, dirt and grime are gone. Clean your railing with a degreaser that doesn’t leave a film. You will need no more than a teaspoon on your railing for this to work.

2nd: Since handrails are some of the most high traffic areas in a home, they must be as durable as possible. For there to be a proper bond, the rails should be sanded down. The rails do not need to be sanded down heavily, but enough to remove the glossy finish. For this step, use 120 grit sandpaper or 80 grit sandpaper sponges. Sand in the direction of the grain for the best result.

3rd: Tape off spindles to get a nice clean edge on the railing. After you let your freshly painted handrails dry, tape off the rails so that the spindles can be painted as well. To have the optimal coverage, use a primer for the best sealing as well. This is especially important if you are painting over a light surface with a dark color.

4th: Paint curing is important because it is the time it takes for your paint to fully harden. Once the paint is fully cured, it will be fully durable, you will be able to wash it, put objects on it, and it will be more resistant to scratches and marks.

Now that you have the basic steps down of how to paint your handrails, it’s time for you to choose the best color for your space. Black and white are classic colors that can match practically any space. Neutrals are also a great option if you want something that will pull all of the decor in your space together. You can always go bold and choose a bright color like red, blue, or yellow. Make sure you choose a color you feel suits our space best.
